I am currently a Vice-Chancellor’s Fellow at RMIT University, based in the School of Art and Design and Creative Practice Enabling Capability Platform. I am a nurse, academic and community engaged researcher in gender, race, health and digital technologies.
I am currently a Vice-Chancellor’s Fellow at RMIT University, based in the School of Art and Design and Creative Practice Enabling Capability Platform. I am a nurse, academic and community engaged researcher in gender, race, health and digital technologies. My Fellowship will engage health professionals in finding new ways to understand, co-design and implement sustainable cultural safety initiatives in a range of health contexts in response to health inequities. I also have an Honorary Senior Research Fellow role at The Centre for Digital Transformation of Health at The University of Melbourne and my own consulting practice.
Prior to coming to RMIT, I was the academic co-convenor of The Data, Systems, and Society Research Network (DSSRN), a collaborative research network across the University of Melbourne (2018-2019). There, I organised two symposia, one on Equity and big data and a second on making unstructured data structured. Before which I was the Stream Leader of Research, Policy and Evaluation at the Centre for Culture, Ethnicity and Health (CEH) at North Richmond Community Health (2015-2018).
I have had extensive experience as a researcher and academic in New Zealand and Australia. I also worked as a Senior Lecturer in Nursing at Monash University, Berwick (2013-2016), where I was the course co-ordinator and campus lead. I taught Year 2 Mental health clinical practice, Contexts of health care and the Education unit in third year. I also developed a new unit on Diversity in healthcare. I was the Chief Examiner and co-ordinator of Contemporary nursing in context in the Master of Nursing Practice.
Prior to moving to Australia, I was at AUT University, Auckland (2005-2012) where I coordinated the Centre for Asian and Migrant Health Research for six years, was the Programme leader for the Bachelor of Health Science (Health Promotion) and taught and led two first year papers Health Assessment in Nursing and Primary health Care. I developed a new stream within the Master of Health Science: Advanced Nursing Practice, Mental Health. At Unitec (1998-2004) I developed and taught the National Certificate in Mental Health Support Work and taught research and communication papers in the Bachelor of Nursing. I taught Supervision in the Master of Health Science and in the Graduate Diploma of Higher Education in the School of Education. Prior to working in education, I was a clinician in mental health and maternal mental health.
Included in my extensive governance experience have been appointments to the Boards of Counties Manukau District Health; Asia New Zealand Foundation and the Inaugural Lotteries Community Sector Research Grant Committee.
